Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham held a special prayer conference on 22nd February to put a spotlight on the crisis in Venezuela.
About 3 million Venezuelans have fled the desperate situation in recent years and millions more remain in the country facing dire shortages of food and medicine.
Samaritan’s Purse is actively helping to meet the physical and spiritual needs of tens of thousands of Venezuelans who have crossed into Colombia. We are partnering with local Colombian congregations in many ways to do this.
At our migrant shelter in La Don Juana, we have served more than 40,000 meals to Venezuelan caminantes, or walkers, who are traveling primarily by foot from the border city of Cucuta to other locations in Colombia, as well as Peru and Ecuador.
We have provided overnight shelter to more than 13,000 people, with thousands among them also receiving hygiene kits and other non-food items. We recently opened a second shelter in a town called Berlin, above the tree line in the mountains, to serve more of these desperate men and women.
We have a 2-day-a-week mobile medical operation in Puerto Santander and a 6-day-a-week medical clinic in Maicao, both of which started last October. Alongside our work at the Centre of Hope in Cucuta (dating from June 2018), Samaritan’s Purse has seen well over 14,000 patients, the vast majority of whom are Venezuelans migrants.
Through our work at these various locations in Colombia, we praise God that many have come to faith in Christ. Jose Luis accepted Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord while at one of our migrant shelters.
Though the road ahead was still uncertain, Jose Luis had assurance of his future in Christ. “They baptised me in the Christian faith and I give thanks to God for that.”
We stand ready to help further as the situation in Venezuela allows.
Please pray for the people of Venezuela to have the food and medicine they need and for them to find hope in Jesus Christ!
