3 boys with shoebox gifts

Thank you for bringing Good News and Great Joy to a child living in Estonia!

Your shoebox gift was one of 10,084 sent to Estonia. We thank God for the thousands of children that have received shoeboxes here since Operation Christmas Child began distributions. While we are not able to provide pictures or information on the specific child who received your individual shoebox, we hope you will be inspired by the photos and stories below.

  • Estonia has a population of 1.3 million
  • 16% of the population are under 15

Eduard lives in an area where, due to migration, many apartment blocks are empty and abandoned, giving a sense of hopelessness. Struggling to overcome the despair, many adults turn to alcohol and drugs, reportedly giving Estonia one of the highest drug-related death rates in Europe.

Eduard still recalls the day he was given a shoebox as a child. ‘I remember very vividly receiving my shoebox gift ‘I remember the emotions I felt – overwhelmed at receiving gifts from overseas, I remember the colouring pens and a notebook! And being shown such love.’

Eduard is now part of the youth team in his church and said, ‘Receiving the shoebox was the beginning of my journey to becoming a Christian.’ He is excited to be part of reaching out to children in his community with the joy of a shoebox gift and the Good News of Jesus.

While helping lead a children’s camp in Estonia with YWAM, Zoe saw each child receive an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift. She said,

“Every year I have been able to give a box through my church… It was such an amazing experience to see their little faces light up!”

Young people from our church distributed 107 shoeboxes.  They also organised fun meetings with games, cakes and different activities on Saturdays with the children who received those shoeboxes. They asked the children to invite their friends and relatives. One of the girls, named Katya, (who really loved her shoebox) invited six school friends! Two girls came and said that now they want to learn more about God. Two boys brought their sisters and mothers, and now they all come on Saturdays. All this is happening because of shoeboxes!

National Leadership Teams

Operation Christmas Child invests in building National Leadership Teams made up of trained local volunteers and staff within over 100 countries. These teams then work alongside many Regional Leadership teams who in turn train local church leaders and teachers. In Estonia 4 teams are working with 35 ministry partners (teams of volunteers in local churches) to make Operation Christmas Child and The Greatest Journey possible each year!

Each shoebox gift delivered by Operation Christmas Child is a tangible expression of God’s amazing love.  But a shoebox is just the beginning. After receiving a shoebox gift, children have the opportunity to enrol in The Greatest Journey – 12 fun and interactive Bible lessons, where they get the chance to discover who Jesus is and how to begin their own journey of faith.  At the end of the course they get to experience a graduation ceremony where they receive a New Testament in their own language.

The Greatest Journey is taught by local volunteers who have been trained to deliver the programme.  It is offered free of charge, without obligation and with the consent of the child’s parent or guardian. Over 167 children in Estonia have enrolled in this programme since it started in 2016.

You can be a part of helping us “go and make disciples of all nations” as Jesus commanded.  Sign up for a monthly gift of £5, and each year you will give 12 children study materials, a New Testament, and the opportunity to share their faith with family and friends.

THANK YOU for sharing Good News and Great Joy with children around the world!
